"Echoes of the Past: Royal House of Stone" is a moderately easy combination adventure and hidden object game that has an engrossing storyline. The game takes place in the Royal House of Orion museum. The story is introduced with spoken and written dialogue that relates the story of the curse on the kingdom of the House of Orion. The inhabitants of the castle have disappeared and it is your task, as you are transported to an earlier era, to solve the mystery of the heir to the throne, King Henry's son, and the curse. The hidden object scenes start with ten hints but each scene includes two mirrors which, when you find them, give you two more hints. Since the objects are moderately easy to find, most users will never need all of the hints. At the end of the game, you have to go back to most of the hidden object locations to find special items and it's good to save hints for these scenes because there are no additional mirrors available for them. Some items to find are contextual while others are junk pile items. In some scenes, you have to find items that fit into a specific category. For example, in one hidden object scene, you need to find all symbols of a king. There is some slight graininess in the hidden object scenes, but it does not have much effect on finding objects. The game has a few puzzles that you need to solve in order to unlock castle doors. Some puzzles are different from those in other games and they are of varying levels of difficulty. Instructions for puzzles are only given at the start of each puzzle and they cannot be viewed again, which can make solving a puzzle difficult. However, puzzles can be skipped. In some scenes, you need to explore the room and pick up items that are used in other rooms. Throughout the game, you move back and forth between rooms, making repeat visits several times to some rooms.
As you move through the game, parts of the story are added to a book which you can read at any time. Spoken dialogue only occurs in the introduction and when inhabitants of the castle are unpetrified. This is good because the acting is not very good. "Echoes of the Past: Royal House of Stone" is an enjoyable adventure/hidden object game. It has plenty of variety with a good balance of adventure, hidden object scenes and puzzles. It seems like a long game but it can be completed in under four hours, especially for more experienced game players. The one downside of the game are the dark, colorless graphics.
