I use some of my very old tablets for what I consider mostly static uses. For example, some of these tablets are great storage backup devices. My oldest iPad (the iPad 1) is used as a recipe book. Older tablets can also be used for storing and occasionally playing games.
By using old tablets as storage devices, you can save space on a newer tablet. Storage space on a tablet can be a major problem on iPads because apps keep getting larger and larger. And if you enable Apple Intelligence, you will find it consuming a huge amount of storage space. iPads until very recently came with a base amount of 64 GB of storage space, which is just not enough for most users today.
Some of the things you can store on an old tablet include reference documents and ebooks that you only need to use occasionally. Old photos can also be stored on an old tablet. I like to store videos and music on one of my old tablets.
An old tablet can also be used for creating and storing a home inventory. You can take photos of all of your possessions and keep them stored on an old tablet. There are apps available that let you itemize and categorize your possessions into a database and that too can be stored on an older tablet.
Years ago I typed all of my recipes into the Pages app on my iPad and then saved them as PDF files. I then transferred them to a program called Documents and organized them into folders. They're now all stored on my first iPad, neatly arranged in categories.
An old tablet is a great way to have an electronic recipe book that is always ready to use in your kitchen. Even an old tablet with limited storage space can serve well for this purpose. I chose to do it with an iPad, but one of my old Amazon fire tablets would have worked just as well.
I have some games on my old tablets that I still enjoy playing. These games are no longer available through the app store so having them on an old tablet lets me continue to get pleasure from them. Before discarding, selling or giving away an old tablet, you might want to check if favorite games are still in the app store.
