Adam Dunn was first drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in 1998. He played in the Reds' minor league system from 1998 through part of 2001, ending his minor league career with a .304 batting average.

Dunn joined the Reds for 66 games in 2001. The following season, his first full one in the major leagues, Dunn batted .249 with 133 hits, 28 doubles, 26 home runs, 71 RBIs, and a career high 19 stolen bases in 158 games. He continued to play with the Reds through August, 2008. In 2007, his last full season with the Reds, Dunn batted .264 with 138 hits, 27 doubles, 40 home runs, and a career high 106 RBIs in 152 games.

The Reds traded Dunn to the Arizona Diamondbacks in August, 2008. The following February, he signed a two-year, $20 million contract with the Washington Nationals. Dunn, who had been primarily an outfielder, became the Nationals first baseman in 2009. That season he batted .267 with 146 hits, 29 doubles, 38 home runs, and 105 RBIs in 159 games.

In December, 2010, Dunn signed a four-year, $56 million contract with the Chicago White Sox. The following season was his poorest one, with a dismal .159 batting average in 122 games. Last year, he batted .219 with 115 hits, 15 doubles, 34 home runs, and 86 RBIs in 149 games.

On August 31, 2014, Dunn was traded to the Athletics. He finished the 2014 season with 94 hits, 18 doubles, 22 home runs, 159 strikeouts to 71 walks, and a .219 batting average in 106 games with the White Sox and 25 games with the Athletics. After the 2014 Wild Card game, Dunn announced his retirement.
