Alfredo Simon, starting pitcher, was first signed by the Philadelphia Phillies in 1999. He played in the Phillies' minor league system from 2001 until July, 2004, when he was traded to the San Francisco Giants. He then played in the Giants' minor league system.

In November, 2006, Simon signed with the Texas Rangers. A month later, he was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles and then immediately traded back to the Phillies. He was returned to the Rangers in March, 2007. He pitched in the Rangers' minor league system for the 2007 season.

Simon signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers in January, 2008, but they released him three months later, prior to the start of the 2008 season. He pitched in the Baltimore Orioles' minor league system in 2008 and he pitched in four games for the team that season but he didn't officially sign with the team until September, 2008.

Simon played in two games with the Orioles in 2009 before having Tommy John surgery that ended his season. The following year, he returned to the team as a relief pitcher, playing in 49 games. In 2010, he pitched 49.1 innings and had a 4-2 record with 17 saves and a 4.93 ERA. He was part of the Orioles' starting rotation in 2011, pitching 115.2 innings in 23 games. He finished the season with a 4-9 record and a 4.90 ERA.

In April, 2012, the Cincinnati Reds claimed Simon off waivers and added him to their bullpen. That season, he pitched 61.0 innings in 36 games and finished the season with a 3-2 record, 1 save, and a 2.66 ERA. In 2013, he again pitched in relief. He finished the 2013 season with a 6-4 record, 1 save, and a 2.87 ERA. As a starting pitcher in 2014, Simon pitched 196.1 innings in 32 games and he finished the season with a 15-10 record, 127 strikeouts to 56 walks, and a 3.44 ERA.

On December 11, 2014, Simon was traded to the Detroit Tigers. He signed a one-year, $5.5 million contract with the Tigers on January 16, 2015. On August 20, 2015, he pitched a complete game shutout against the Texas Rangers. He finished the season with a 13-12 record, 117 strikeouts to 68 walks, and a 5.05 ERA in 187.0 innings in 31 games.

Simon returned to the Reds on a one-year contract on March 17, 2016. He pitched in just 15 games with the Reds in 2016, finishing the season with 2 wins to 7 losses, 117 strikeouts to 68 walks, and a 9.36 ERA.

Simon became a free agent on November 3, 2016. He didn't play in the major leagues in 2017. He played in the Mexican League in 2018. He was released by the team on August 16, 2018. He played in the Dominican Winter League in 2019 and 2020.

Simon played in the Mexican League and the Dominican Winter League in 2021.
