Prior to being hired as the Reds manager, Price was the team's pitching coach for four seasons. Price pitched in college (UC Berkeley) and in the minor leagues (with Los Angeles Angels and Seattle Mariners) but never in the major leagues. He started his major league career as a pitching coach in 2000, when he was hired by the Mariners. After coaching for Seattle for seven years, and helping the team lead the American League in ERA, Price moved to the Arizona Diamondbacks. He was the pitching coach for Arizona until he resigned in 2009. The following season, he started his coaching career with the Reds.
In his first year as a major league manager, Price led the Reds to a 76-86 record in 2014. They finished in fourth place in the National League Central division. They had a worse season in 2015, finishing in fifth place in the division with a 64-98 record. They fared only slightly better in 2016, when they finished with a 68-94 record. However, they were still in last place in the NL Central division.
