Dan Haren was a top collegiate player when he was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in 2001. He was called up to the Cardinals after just two years in the minor leagues, playing in 14 games with the Cardinals in 2003. The following season, he was back in the minor leagues, pitching just 46.0 innings in 14 games with the Cardinals in 2004.

After the 2004 season ended, the Cardinals traded Haren to the Oakland Athletics. In 2005, he finally had a full season in the major leagues, pitching 217.0 innings in 34 games. He finished the season with a 14-12 record, 163 strikeouts to 53 walks, and a 3.73 ERA.

In 2007, Haren had a low 3.07 ERA and a 15-9 record in 34 games with the Athletics. Three months after the season ended, he was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks. In his first season with the Diamondbacks, he had a career high 16 wins (to 8 losses) with a 3.33 ERA in 33 games.

Haren signed a four-year, $44.75 million contract with the Diamondbacks in August, 2008. The following season, he had a career high 223 strikeouts to 38 walks with a 3.14 ERA in 33 games. After 21 games with the Diamondbacks in July, 2010, they traded him to the Los Angeles Angels. That season, he had a 7-8 record and a 4.60 ERA with the Diamondbacks and a 5-4 record and a 2.87 ERA in 14 games with the Angels.

Haren had a strong season in 2011. That year, he had a 3.17 ERA with career highs in games played (35), innings pitched (238.1), and wins (16 to 10 losses).

Haren became a free agent after the 2012 season and in December, 2012, he signed a one-year contract with the Washington Nationals. Last year, he had a 10-14 record and a 4.67 ERA in 31 games. In November, 2013, Haren signed a one-year, $10 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He finished the 2014 season with a 13-11 record, 145 strikeouts to 36 walks, and a 4.02 ERA in 186.0 innings in 32 games.

On December 10, 2014, Haren was traded to the Miami Marlins. He was traded to the Chicago Cubs on July 31, 2015. He finished the 2015 season with an 11-9 record, 132 strikeouts to 38 walks, and a 3.60 ERA in 187.1 innings in 21 games with the Marlins and 11 games with the Cubs.

Haren retired as a major league player after the 2015 season.
