Drew Smyly, starting pitcher for the Chicago Cubs, was first drafted by the Detroit Tigers in 2010. He spent 2011 and part of the 2012 season in the Tigers' minor league system, finishing with an 11-8 record and a 2.57 ERA.

In 2012, Smyly joined the Tigers as both a starting pitcher and a relief pitcher. That season, he pitched 99.1 innings in 23 games and he finished with a 4-3 record and a 3.99 ERA. He pitched out of the Tigers' bullpen in 2013, pitching 76.0 innings in 63 games. He finished the season with a 6-0 record, 2 saves, 81 strikeouts to 17 walks, and a 2.37 ERA.

Smyly started the 2014 season as part of the Tigers' starting rotation. On July 31, 2014, he was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays. He finished the season with a 9-10 record, 133 strikeouts to 42 walks, and a 3.24 ERA in 153.0 innings in 21 games with the Tigers and 7 games with the Rays.
