Jeremy Guthrie, retired starting pitcher, was a top player at Stanford University before being drafted by the Cleveland Indians in 2002. He played in the Indians' minor league system from 2003 through 2006, finishing with a 40-36 record in 101 games. From 2004 through 2006, he pitched just 37.0 innings in 16 games with the Indians.
In January, 2007, the Indians designated Guthrie for assignment and ten days later, he was claimed off waivers by the Baltimore Orioles. He started as a relief pitcher for the Orioles in 2007 but ended up primarily as a starting pitcher. He finished the 2007 season with 175.1 innings pitched, a 7-5 record, and a 3.70 ERA in 32 games. The following season, he had a career low ERA of 3.63 in 30 games.
The Orioles traded Guthrie to the Colorado Rockies in February, 2012. He had a 3-9 record and a 6.35 ERA when the Rockies traded him to the Kansas City Royals in July, 2012. He then played in 14 games with the Royals and he had a 5-3 record and a 3.16 ERA with them.
In November, 2012, Guthrie signed a three-year, $25 million contract with the Royals. In 2013, he pitched a career high 211.2 innings in 33 games and he had a career high 15 wins (to 12 losses) and a 4.04 ERA. He finished the 2014 season with a 13-11 record, 124 strikeouts to 49 walks, and a 4.13 ERA in 202.2 innings in 32 games. In the postseason, he gave up 11 hits and 6 runs in 13.1 innings in 3 games.
Guthrie pitched in 30 games with the Royals in 2015. He finished the season with an 8-8 record, 84 strikeouts to 44 walks, and a 5.95 ERA in 148.1 innings.
Guthrie signed with the Texas Rangers on February 21, 2016. He was released a month later on March 28th. He then signed with the San Diego Padres on April 2nd but they released him on June 2nd. He signed with the Miami Marlins on June 25th. He played in 17 games in the minors in 2016 but in no games in the majors.
Guthrie signed a minor league contract with the Washington Nationals on February 11, 2017. He was designated for assignment on April 9th, after pitching just 0.2 innings with the Nationals. He opted for free agency on April 12th. He then played in the Mexican League, until he was released on June 2nd.
Guthrie retired in July, 2017.
