John Mayberry, Jr., outfielder, is following in the footsteps of his father. Mayberry, Sr. was a major league first baseman from 1968 through 1982, playing for the Houston Astros, Kansas City Royals, Toronto Blue Jays, and New York Yankees. He finished his career with 255 home runs and a .253 batting average.

Mayberry, Jr. was first drafted by the Seattle Mariners in 2002 but he opted instead to attend Stanford University. He was a top baseball player in his three years at Stanford. In 2005, he was drafted by the Texas Rangers and he left Stanford to play in the Rangers' minor league system from 2005 through 2008.

Mayberry was traded by the Rangers to the Phillies in November, 2008. He played in 39 games with the Phillies in 2009 and 11 games in 2010. He had his first full season in the major leagues in 2011, when he played in 104 games with the Phillies. That year, he had 73 hits, 17 doubles, a career high 15 home runs, and a .273 batting average.

The 2012 season was Mayberry's best one with career highs in games played (149), hits (108), and doubles (24). He also had 14 home runs and a .245 batting average. In 2013, he had 80 hits, 23 doubles, and a .227 batting average in 134 games.

On August 31, 2014, Mayberry was traded to the Blue Jays. He finished the 2014 season with 31 hits and a .212 batting average in 63 games with the Phillies and 15 games with the Blue Jays.

Mayberry signed a one-year contract with the New York Mets on December 11, 2014. He played in 59 games with the Mets in 2015 before being released on July 30th. During that time, he had just 18 hits and a .164 batting average. He signed a minor league contract with the Chicago White Sox on August 7th but he was released on August 26th.

Mayberry signed with the Detroit Tigers on January 11, 2016. He was released on March 31st. He hasn't played professional baseball since 2015.
