J.P. Arencibia, retired catcher, was first drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2007. He played in the minor leagues for four years, with a particularly strong 2010 season. That year, he was named the Pacific Coast League MVP. In 2010, he also made his first major league appearance, playing in 11 games with the Blue Jays.
Arencibia had his best season in 2011. That year, he batted .219 with career highs in hits (97), doubles (20), home runs (23), and RBIs (78). As a catcher, he made 822 putouts and 6 errors with a .993 fielding percentage.
In 2013, Arencibia batted just .194 with 92 hits, 18 doubles, 21 home runs, and 55 RBIs in 138 games. He became a free agent after the season and he signed a one-year, $1.8 million contract with the Texas Rangers in December, 2013. He finished the 2014 season with 36 hits and a .177 batting average in 63 games.
Arencibia signed a minor league contract with the Baltimore Orioles on January 8, 2015. They released him on April 9, 2015. A week later, he signed a minor league contract with the Tampa Bay Rays. He played in just 24 games with the Rays in 2015.
Arencibia signed a minor league contract with the Phillies on December 14, 2015. He was released on May 11, 2016. He didn't play in the major leagues in 2016.
Arencibia announced his retirement as a player on January 18, 2017.
