Manny Machado, shortstop for the San Diego Padres, was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in 2010 at the age of 17. He played in the minor leagues until 2012, when he was called up to the Orioles to play in 51 games with them.

In 2013, Machado had a strong season in the major leagues, batting .283 with 189 hits, 51 doubles, 14 home runs, and 71 RBIs in 156 games. His outstanding defensive skills earned him a Gold Glove. In 156 games at third base, Machado made 355 assists, 116 putouts, 42 double plays, and 13 errors and he had a fielding percentage of .973.

Machado spent half of the 2014 season, including the postseason, on the DL. He finished the season with 91 hits, 14 doubles, 12 home runs, and a .278 batting average in 82 games.

In 2015, Machado was the only major leaguer to play in all 162 games. He finished the season with 181 hits, 30 doubles, 35 home runs, 20 stolen bases, 86 RBIs, and a .286 batting average. Machado became a free agent on October 29, 2018. He signed a 10-year, $300 million contract with the Padres on February 21, 2019. He finished the 2019 season with 150 hits, 21 doubles, 32 home runs, 85 RBIs, 128 strikeouts to 65 walks, and a .256 batting average in 156 games. Defensively, as the Padres' third baseman in 119 games, he made 187 assists, 79 putouts, and 11 errors.

Machado won his first Silver Slugger award in 2020. He finished the season with 68 hits, 12 doubles, 16 home runs, 47 RBIs, 37 strikeouts to 26 walks, and a .304 batting average in 60 games. Defensively, he played 56 games at third base. In the postseason, he batted .154 with 4 hits and 2 home runs in 26 at-bats in 6 games.
