Pedro Alvarez, infielder, was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2008. After less than two years in the minor leagues, he was called up to the Pirates in 2010, playing in 95 games with them. The following season, his time was split between the Pirates (74 games) and the minor leagues.

In 2012, his first full season in the major leagues, Alvarez batted .244 with 128 hits, 25 doubles, 30 home runs, and 85 RBIs in 149 games. In 2013, he won a Silver Slugger award and he led the National League in home runs with 36. His other statistics for 2013 include 130 hits, 22 doubles, 100 RBIs, and a .233 batting average in 152 games. He finished the 2014 season with 92 hits, 18 home runs, 56 RBIs, and a .231 batting average in 122 games.

Alvarez finished the 2015 season with 106 hits, 18 doubles, 27 home runs, 77 RBIs, and a .243 batting average in 150 games. In his first year as the Pirates' regular first baseman, he made 68 assists, 98 double plays, 966 putouts, and 23 errors in 124 games. He played in the postseason Wild Card game and had three strikeouts in three at-bats.

Alvarez signed a one-year, $5.75 million contract with the Baltimore Orioles on March 10, 2016. He finished the 2016 season with 84 hits, 20 doubles, 22 home runs, 49 RBIs, and a .249 batting average in 109 games. He was primarily a DH in 2016.

Alvarez became a free agent on November 3, 2016. He signed a minor league contract to return to the Orioles on March 13, 2017. He spent most of the 2017 season in the minors, playing in just 14 games with the Orioles.

Alvarez elected free agency on November 2, 2017. He re-signed with the Orioles on a minor league contract on February 26, 2018. He spent time on the DL and in the minors in 2018, playing in just 45 games with the Orioles.

Alvarez became a free agent on October 9, 2018. He signed a minor league contract with the Miami Marlins on December 3, 2018. He was released on March 23, 2019. He hasn't played professional baseball since 2018.

On February 4, 2022, Alvarez was hired by the Milwaukee Brewers as an assistant in baseball operations and player development.
