Chip Hale

Chip Hale, former manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks, was a part-time major league baseball player for seven years. He was first drafted by the Minnesota Twins in 1987. He was a utility player for the team from 1989-1990 and 1993-1996. He played with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1997 and he finished his professional career as a player in the minor leagues in 1998. He ended his major league career with 159 hits, 27 doubles, 78 RBIs, 68 strikeouts to 58 walks, and a .277 batting average in 333 games.

Two years after retiring as a baseball player, Hale became a minor league manager. In six years managing in the minor leagues, he had 405 wins to 317 losses. He left the minor leagues in 2006 to be a coach for the Diamondbacks. He stayed in that position until 2009, when he moved over to the New York Mets to be their third base coach.

Hale coached for the Mets through the 2011 season. In 2012, he joined the Oakland Athletics as their bench coach. He stayed in that position through the 2014 season.

On October 13, 2014, Hale was named manager of the Diamondbacks for the 2015 season. The team and Hale finished in third place in the National League West division with 79 wins and 83 losses.

Hale and the Diamondbacks had a poor season in 2016, finishing fourth in the NL West division with a 68-94 record. Hale was fired after the season ended on October 3rd. However, he didn't stay unemployed for long. He was hired on October 18th by the Oakland Athletics as their new third base coach. He moved from the Athletics to the Washington Nationals in November, 2017. His new position was as the Nationals bench coach.

Hale was the Detroit Tigers third base coach at the beginning of the 2021 season. On July 5, 2021, he was hired as the head baseball coach for the University of Arizona.
