Dan Jennings

Dan Jennings, former manager of the Miami Marlins, was an odd choice for managing a major league baseball team. He had no experience as a major league player and just one Spring training with a New York Yankees' class A minor league team in 1984. His only other baseball playing experience was as a student at the University of Southern Mississippi.

After his failure to make the major leagues, Jennings coached high school baseball in Mobile, Alabama. In 1986, he started a ten-year scouting career with major league teams. He began as an associate scout for the Cincinnati Reds and moved to being an area scout for the Seattle Mariners in 1988. He became the scouting director for the Tampa Bay Rays in 1995.

Jennings joined the Marlins as their vice president of player personnel in 2002. Five years later, in September, 2007, he was named the Marlins' assistant general manager. He moved up to the general manager position at the end of the 2013 season. On May 18, 2015, he replaced Mike Redmond as interim manager of the Marlins. He led the Marlins to a 55-69 record for the second half of the season.

On January 8, 2016, Jennings returned to front office work when he was hired as assistant manager to the general manager for the Washington Nationals.
