Ivan Nova, pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates, started playing baseball as a child in the Dominican Republic. In July, 2004, his childhood dream of being a New York Yankee came true when the team signed him. He played in the Yankees' minor league system from 2006 through most of 2010, finishing with 35 wins to 32 losses and 434 strikeouts to 191 walks.
Nova made his first appearances with the Yankees in 2010, both as a starting pitcher and as a relief pitcher. In 2011, his first full season as a starting pitcher in the major leagues, he had an impressive 16-4 record, 98 strikeouts to 57 walks, and a 3.70 ERA in 165.1 innings in 28 games. His post-season record that year included 1 win and 1 loss and a 4.32 ERA in 8.1 innings in 2 games. He gave up 7 hits, 4 runs, and 2 home runs.
