John Ryan Murphy, catcher, was drafted by the New York Yankees in 2009. He played in the Yankees' minor league system from 2009 through most of 2014. In 451 games, he batted .263 with 450 hits, 110 doubles, 225 RBIs, and 307 strikeouts to 162 walks. Defensively, as a catcher in 359 games, he made 291 assists, 2,838 putouts, and 42 errors. He caught players trying to steal 26% of the time and he had a .987 fielding percentage.

Murphy first joined the Yankees in 2013, playing in just 16 games with them. In 2014, he batted .284 with 23 hits in 32 games. As the Yankees' backup catcher in 2015, he batted .277 with 43 hits in 67 games. Defensively, he made 24 assists, 389 putouts, and 3 errors in 65 games. He caught players trying to steal 27.6% of the time and he had a .993 fielding percentage.

The Yankees traded Murphy to the Minnesota Twins on November 11, 2015. He spent most of the 2016 season in the minors, playing in just 26 games with the Twins.

Murphy was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks on July 27, 2017. He spent most of the 2017 season in the minors, playing in just 5 games with the Diamondbacks.

Murphy played in 87 games with the Diamondbacks in 2018. He batted .202 with 42 hits. Defensively, as a catcher in 68 games, he made 425 putouts and 6 errors. He caught players trying to steal 24.3% of the time and he had a .987 fielding percentage.

Murphy was traded to the Atlanta Braves on July 31, 2019. He spent most of the 2019 season in the minors, playing in just 25 games with the Diamondbacks and 1 game with the Braves.

Murphy became a free agent on December 2, 2019. He signed a minor league contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates on January 10, 2020. He played in 25 games in 2020, and he batted .172.

Murphy elected free agency on October 30, 2020. He didn’t play professional baseball in 2021.
