Johnny Monell was first drafted in 2005 by the San Francisco Giants but he didn't sign with them. A year later, the New York Mets drafted him and again he didn't sign. But when the Giants drafted him once more in 2007, he agreed to sign with them. He played in the Giants' minor league system from 2007 through 2013. He joined the Giants for just eight games in 2013.

The Baltimore Orioles acquired Monell in November, 2013, but he played only for a short time in their minor league system. In May, 2014, he was acquired by the Los Angeles Dodgers and he continued to play in the minor leagues through 2014.

As a minor league player from 2007 through 2014, Monell had 618 hits, 164 doubles, 81 home runs, 356 RBIs, and 533 strikeouts to 279 walks in 709 games. Defensively, he caught 487 games and he made 381 assists, 3,450 putouts, and 46 errors. He caught players trying to steal 28 percent of the time.

Monell signed with the Mets on November 6, 2014. He played in just 27 games with the Mets in 2015, spending the rest of the time in the minors.

Monell spent the entire 2016 season in the minors. He became a free agent on October 10, 2016. He didn't play professional baseball in 2017.

Monell rejoined the Mets organization on a minor league contract on April 15, 2018. He spent the 2018 season in the minor leagues. He retired as a major league player on August 4, 2018.
