Justin Maxwell, retired outfielder, was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in 2001 and by the Texas Rangers in 2004 but he opted for college instead. When the Washington Nationals drafted him in 2005, he signed with them. He played in the Nationals' minor league system from 2006 through part of 2007.
Maxwell joined the Nationals for 15 games in 2007. That September, he hit the first of four career grand slams, all hit in September (September 11, 2007; September 30, 2009; September 15, 2010; September 22, 2013). In each of the first three of those seasons, he played in no more than 67 games and had no more than 22 hits.
Maxwell had Tommy John surgery following the 2010 season. In February, 2011, he was traded to the New York Yankees and he played in 48 games in their minor league system in 2011. He was claimed off waivers by the Houston Astros on April 8, 2012. That season, he played in a career high 124 games. He finished the 2012 season with 72 hits, 13 doubles, 18 home runs, 53 RBIs, and a .229 batting average.
After 40 games with the Astros in 2013, Maxwell was traded to the Kansas City Royals. On September 22, 2013, he hit his fourth September grand slam. He spent most of the 2014 season in the minor leagues, playing in just 20 games with the Royals.
Maxwell signed with the San Francisco Giants on November 24, 2014. He finished the 2015 season with 52 hits and a .209 batting average in 100 games with the Giants. Defensively, he played 19 games in left field, 3 games in center field, and 58 games in right field.
Maxwell was designated for assignment on September 1, 2015. He signed a minor league contract with the Miami Marlins on December 1, 2015. He was released on March 29, 2016. Three days later, on April 1st, he signed a minor league contract with the Boston Red Sox. After 61 games in the minors in 2016, he was released.
Maxwell retired in 2016. After retiring, he decided to attend the School of Dentistry at the University of Maryland in Baltimore.
Personal Life
Maxwell's father was the White House dentist to Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush from 1997 through 2002.
Maxwell and his wife Loren have three children.
