Mike Montgomery, pitcher for the New York Mets, was first drafted by the Kansas City Royals in 2008. After playing in the Royals' minor league system for five seasons, he was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays in December, 2012, He continued in the Rays' minor league system through 2014.

As a minor leaguer from 2008 through 2014, Montgomery pitched 789.1 innings in 155 games. He had a 42-47 win-loss record and 645 strikeouts to 311 walks.

The Rays traded Montgomery to the Seattle Mariners on March 31, 2015. He pitched two consecutive complete game shutouts in June, 2015 (June 23rd against the Royals, June 30th against the San Diego Padres). He finished the 2015 season with a 4-6 record, 64 strikeouts to 37 walks, and a 4.60 ERA in 90.0 innings in 16 games.

Montgomery was traded to the Chicago Cubs on July 20, 2016. He finished the 2016 season with a 2.52 ERA, 4 wins to 5 losses, and 92 strikeouts to 38 walks in 32 games with the Mariners and 17 games with the Cubs. In the postseason, he pitched 14.1 innings in 11 games and he gave up 14 hits and 5 runs.

Montgomery pitched in 14 games as a starter and 30 games of relief with the Cubs in 2017. He finished the season with 7 wins and 8 losses, 3 saves, 100 strikeouts to 55 walks, and a 3.38 ERA in 320.2 innings. In the postseason, he pitched 4.1 innings in 5 games and he gave up 14 hits and 9 runs.

Montgomery finished the 2018 season with 5 wins and 6 losses, 86 strikeouts to 39 walks, and a 3.99 ERA in 124.0 innings in 38 games. He didn't pitch in the postseason.

Montgomery returned to the Royals in trade on July 15, 2019. He spent time on the DL in 2019 with a mild left lat strain. He finished the season with 3 wins and 9 losses, 69 strikeouts to 34 walks, and a 4.95 ERA in 90.1 innings in 20 games as a relief pitcher with the Cubs and 13 games as a starting pitcher with the Royals.

Montgomery pitched in just 3 games in 2020. He finished the season with a 5.06 ERA in 5.1 innings.

Montgomery became a free agent on October 30, 2020. He signed a minor league contract with the Mets on February 14, 2021, and he was released on March 28th. He signed a minor league contract with the New York Yankees on April 6th, and he was released on May 31st. He played only in the minor leagues with the Yankees in 2021.

Montgomery signed a minor league contract with the Mets on March 19, 2022.
