Pat Murphy

Pat Murphy, interim manager of the San Diego Padres, had a limited professional career as a baseball player. After playing in college, he signed with the San Francisco Giants in 1982. He pitched in the Giants' minor league system in 1983, 1985, and 1986. He finished with a 7-10 record and a 5.21 ERA in 52 games.

In 1987, Murphy started a career as a college coach. His first position was as head coach at the University of Notre Dame. After serving in that position from 1987 through 1994, he left to become head coach at Arizona State University. He was very successful at ASU, leading his team to the College World Series in 1998, 2005, 2007, and 2009. In 1998, he was named Baseball America's Coach of the Year.

Murphy finally made it to the major leagues in 2010 when he joined the Padres as a special assistant to baseball operations. After a year in that position, he became a minor league manager for the Padres. From 2011-2014, his minor league teams had a 241-199 record.

On June 16, 2015, Murphy was named interim manager of the Padres, taking over for Bud Black. Under Murphy's leadership, the Padres had a 42-54 record in 2015.

Murphy was hired as the bench coach for the Milwaukee Brewers in October, 2015.
