Steven Souza, retired outfielder, was first drafted in 2007 by the Washington Nationals. He played in the Nationals' minor league system from 2007 through most of 2014, joining the Nationals for 21 games that season. In those 21 games, he had three hits, two of which were home runs.
As a minor league player from 2007 through 2014, Souza batted .260 with 659 hits, 142 doubles, 93 home runs, 158 stolen bases, 421 RBIs, and 692 strikeouts to 337 walks in 722 games. Defensively, he played all fielding positions except second base and catcher. He played 117 games at first base, 249 games at third base, 64 games at shortstop, 196 games in right field, 48 games in center field, and 2 games in left field.
Souza was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays on December 19, 2014. He spent time on the DL in 2015 with a broken hand. He finished the season with 84 hits, 15 doubles, 16 home runs, 40 RBIs, and a .225 batting average in 110 games. As a right fielder in 103 games, he made 172 putouts and 2 errors.
In 2016, Souza batted .247 in 120 games with the Rays. He finished the season with 106 hits, 17 doubles, 17 home runs, and 49 RBIs. Defensively, as the Rays' right fielder in 111 games, he made 226 putouts and 3 errors.
Souza finished the 2017 season with 125 hits, 21 doubles, 30 home runs, 16 stolen bases, 78 RBIs, 179 strikeouts to 84 walks, and a .239 batting average in 148 games. Defensively, as the Rays' right fielder in 138 games, he made 240 putouts and 5 errors.
Souza was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks on February 20, 2018. He spent time on the DL in 2018 with a right pectoral strain. He finished the season with 53 hits, 15 doubles, 29 RBIs, 75 strikeouts to 28 walks, and a .220 batting average in 72 games. Defensively, as a right fielder, he made 103 putouts and 3 errors in 65 games.
Souza had knee surgery in April, 2019, and he missed the entire season. He became a free agent on December 2, 2019. He signed with the Chicago Cubs on January 28, 2020. He played in just 11 games before the Cubs released him on September 8, 2020.
Souza signed a minor league contract with the Houston Astros on February 1, 2021. He was released on March 24th. He signed a minor league contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers on April 12th. He spent most of the 2021 regular season in the minors, playing in just 17 games with the Dodgers. In the postseason, he had 1 hit in 8 at-bats in 10 games.
Souza became a free agent on November 3, 2021. He signed a minor league contract with the Seattle Mariners on March 14, 2022. He was released on May 23rd.
Souza retired on July 19, 2022.
