Francisco Pena, catcher, is following in the footsteps of his father, Tony, who was a major league catcher from 1980 through 1997. The senior Pena went on to manage the Kansas City Royals from 2002 through 2005. He was named the American League Manager of the Year in 2003. Three years later, he became a coach for the New York Yankees.

In 2006, Pena was signed by the New York Mets. He signed with the Royals on November 17, 2013. He played in the minor leagues from 2007 through most of 2016.

Pena joined the Royals for one game in 2014 and eight games in 2015. He was traded to the Baltimore Orioles on December 2, 2015. He played in 14 games with the Orioles in 2016. He also played in 54 games in the minors.

Pena spent most of the 2017 season in the minors, playing in just five games with the Orioles.

Pena became a free agent on October 2, 2017. He signed a minor league contract with the St. Louis Cardinals on December 8, 2017. He played in 58 games in 2018, and he had 27 hits and a .203 batting average.

The Cardinals traded Pena to the San Francisco Giants on May 2, 2019. He spent the 2019 season in the minors.

Pena became a free agent on November 4, 2019. He signed a minor league contract with the Cincinnati Reds on December 10th. He played in the Dominican Winter League and the Caribbean Series in 2020.

Pena elected free agency on November 2, 2020. He signed a minor league contract with the Oakland Athletics on December 9th. He spent the 2021 season in the minors. After the season ended, he played in the Dominican Winter League.

Pena became a free agent on November 7, 2021.

Personal Life

Pena and his father are not the only major league players in the family. His uncle Ramon Pena played for the Detroit Tigers in 1989 and his brother Tony played with the Atlanta Braves in 2006 and the Royals from 2007 through 2009.
