Joe Ross, starting pitcher for the San Francisco Giants, was first drafted by the San Diego Padres in 2011. He was traded to the Washington Nationals on December 19, 2014. He played in the minor leagues from 2011 through half of 2015. In 76 games, he had a 20-21 win-loss record, 310 strikeouts to 110 walks, and a 3.64 ERA in 375.2 innings.

Ross joined the Nationals for 16 games in 2015. He finished with a 5-5 record, 69 strikeouts to 21 walks, and a 3.64 ERA in 76.2 innings.

Ross had a 3.43 ERA in 19 games with the Nationals in 2016. He finished the season with 7 wins to 5 losses and 93 strikeouts to 29 walks in 105.0 innings. In the postseason, he pitched 2.2 innings in one game and he gave up 3 hits and 4 runs.
