Mikie Mahtook, outfielder for the Detroit Tigers, was first drafted in 2008 by the Miami Marlins but he opted instead to continue playing for Louisiana State University. He was a top player at the university when he was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2011. He played in the Rays' minor league system from 2011 through part of 2015. In 493 games, he batted .269 with 506 hits, 115 doubles, 76 stolen bases, 243 RBIs, and 439 strikeouts to 151 walks. Defensively, he played 38 games in left field, 189 games in center field, and 259 games in right field.

Mahtook joined the Rays for 41 games in 2015. He batted .295 with 31 hits, 5 doubles, 1 triple, 9 home runs, and 19 RBIs. Defensively, he played 16 games in left field, 13 games in center field, and 12 games in right field.

In 2016, Mahtook batted .195 in 65 games with the Rays. Defensively, he played 26 games in left field, 23 games in center field, and 18 games in right field. He made 106 putouts and no errors.

Mahtook was traded to the Tigers on January 18, 2017.
