Adalberto Mondesi, infielder for the Boston Red Sox, was signed by the Kansas City Royals in 2011. He played in the Royals' minor league system from 2012 through 2015. In 366 games, he batted .246 with 352 hits, 71 stolen bases, 143 RBIs, and 393 strikeouts to 94 walks. Defensively, as a shortstop, he made 890 assists, 157 double plays, 419 putouts, and 82 errors in 324 games.

Mondesi made his major league debut in the 2015 World Series. He became the first player since 1885 to have his first major league at-bat in a World Series game. He struck out as a pinch hitter on October 30, 2015.

In 2016, Mondesi split his time between the Royals and the minors. He batted .185 with 25 hits in 47 games with the Royals. Defensively, he played 42 games at second base and 7 games at shortstop.

Mondesi spent most of the 2017 season in the minors, playing in just 25 games with the Royals.

In 2018, Mondesi decided to play under the name Adalberto Mondesi. He spent part of the season on the DL with right shoulder impingement syndrome. In 75 games, he had 76 hits, 13 doubles, 14 home runs, 32 stolen bases, 37 RBIs, 77 strikeouts to 11 walks, and a .276 batting average. Defensively, he played 61 games at shortstop and 12 games at second base.

Mondesi spent time on the DL in 2019 with a groin strain and with a shoulder injury. He finished the season with 109 hits, 20 doubles, 43 stolen bases, 62 RBIs, 132 strikeouts to 19 walks, and a .263 batting average in 102 games. Defensively, as a shortstop in 100 games, he made 286 assists, 66 double plays, 147 putouts, and 7 errors.

Mondesi played in 59 games in 2020. He finished the season with 56 hits, 11 doubles, 6 home runs, 22 RBIs, 24 stolen bases, 70 strikeouts to 11 walks, and a .256 batting average. Defensively, he played all 59 games at shortstop.

Mondesi spent most of the 2021 season on the IL. He played in just 35 games with the Royals and he had a .230 batting average.

The Royals traded Mondesi to the Red Sox on January 24, 2023.

Personal Life

Mondesi's father played major league baseball for seven teams from 1993 through 2005. In 1994, he was named the National League Rookie of the Year. He won Gold Glove awards in 1995 and 1997.
