Tyler Thornburg, relief pitcher, was both a pitcher and an outfielder in college. He was drafted as a pitcher by the Milwaukee Brewers in 2010. He played in the Brewers' minor league system from 2010 through most of 2012.

Thornburg joined the Brewers for eight games in 2012. He pitched as both a starter and a reliever in 22.0 innings and he had a 4.50 ERA. He spent most of the season in the minors, pitching 112.2 innings in 21 minor league games.

In 2013, Thornburg split his time between the minors and the Brewers, pitching in 15 games in the minors and 18 games with the Brewers. As both a starter and a reliever for the Brewers, he had career highs in innings pitched (66.2) and strikeouts (48 to 26 walks). He finished the season with a career low ERA of 2.03.

As a relief pitcher for the Brewers in 2014, he pitched 29.2 innings in 27 games and he had a 4.25 ERA. He had control issues that season, walking 21 batters while striking out 28. In 2015, he pitched again from the bullpen. He finished the season with a 3.67 ERA in 34.1 innings in 24 games. He also pitched 88.2 innings in 17 games in the minors in 2015.

Thornburg finished the 2016 season with a 2.15 ERA in 67 games. He had 8 wins to 5 losses, 13 saves, and 90 strikeouts to 25 walks in 67.0 innings.

Thornburg was traded to the Boston Red Sox on December 6, 2016. He spent the 2017 season on the DL.

Thornburg pitched in 25 games in 2018. He had 2 wins and no losses, 21 strikeouts to 10 walks, and a 5.63 ERA in 24.0 innings. He didn't pitch in the postseason.

The Red Sox released Thornburg on July 10, 2019. He signed a minor league contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 30, 2019. He spent time on the DL in 2019 with right hip impingement. He pitched in 16 games and he had a 7.71 ERA in 18.2 innings. He also pitched in 23 games in the minors.

Thornburg became a free agent on November 4, 2019. He signed a minor league contract with the Cincinnati Reds on December 30th. He pitched just 7.0 innings in 7 games in 2020, and he had a 3.86 ERA.

Thornburg elected free agency on October 28, 2020. He didn't play professional baseball in 2021.

Thornburg signed with the Atlanta Braves on March 16, 2022, and he was released on May 29th. He signed a minor league contract with the Minnesota Twins on June 3rd. He was released on September 4th.
