Amir Garrett, pitcher for the Kansas City Royals, was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in 2011. While playing in the Reds' minor league system, he continued at St. John's University, playing on their basketball team. He eventually gave up basketball to play baseball full-time in the Reds' system.

Garrett pitched in 14 games as a starter and 2 games of relief with the Reds in 2017. He finished the season with 3 wins and 8 losses, 63 strikeouts to 40 walks, and a 7.39 ERA in 70.2 innings.
