Dylan Covey, pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies, was first drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in 2010. However, a medical exam revealed that he had Type I diabetes and he didn't sign with them. Instead, he went to the University of San Diego.
The Oakland Athletics drafted Covey in 2013. He was a starting pitcher in their minor league system from 2013 through 2016. He was claimed off waivers by the Chicago White Sox on December 8, 2016.
In 2017, Covey pitched in 12 games as a starter and 6 games in relief with the White Sox. He finished the season with no wins and 7 losses, 41 strikeouts to 34 walks, and a 7.71 ERA in 70.0 innings.
Covey finished the 2018 season with 5 wins and 14 losses, 91 strikeouts to 52 walks, and a 5.18 ERA in 121.2 innings in 27 games.
Covey spent time on the DL in 2019 with with shoulder inflammation. He finished the season with 1 win and 8 losses, 41 strikeouts to 28 walks, and a 7.98 ERA in 58.2 innings in 18 games.
Covey became a free agent on January 24, 2020. He signed a minor league contract with the Tampa Bay Rays on February 3rd. He was traded to the Boston Red Sox on July 21, 2020. He pitched just 14.0 innings in 8 games, and he had an ERA of 7.07.
Covey played in China in 2021 and 2022.
Covey signed a minor league contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers on January 30, 2023. He was claimed off waivers by the Phillies on May 20th.
Personal Life
Covey's father, Darrell, was drafted by the New York Mets in 1968 but he didn't sign with them and he never played professional baseball.
