James Hoyt, relief pitcher, began his professional baseball career in the North American League, the American Association, and the Mexican League in 2012. He was signed to a minor league contract with the Atlanta Braves in November, 2012. He was traded to the Houston Astros on January 14, 2015. He spent all of 2013 through 2015 in the minor leagues.

Hoyt pitched in 22 games with the Astros in 2016. He finished with 1 win to 1 loss, 28 strikeouts to 9 walks, and a 4.50 ERA in 22.0 innings. He also played in 49 games in the minors.

Hoyt finished the 2017 season with 1 win and no losses, 66 strikeouts to 14 walks, and a 4.38 ERA in 49.1 innings in 43 games with the Astros. He didn't pitch in the postseason.

Hoyt spent most of the 2018 season on the DL and in the minors. He pitched in just one game with the Astros.

Hoyt became a free agent on November 30, 2018. He signed a minor league contract with the Cleveland Indians on December 1, 2018. He spent most of the 2019 season on the DL and in the minors, pitching just 8.1 innings in 8 games with the Indians.

Hoyt was traded to the Miami Marlins on August 1, 2020. He pitched in 24 games, and he finished the season with 2 wins and no losses and a 1.23 ERA in 14.2 innings with the Marlins. In the postseason, he pitched 1.0 innings in 2 games, and he gave up 1 hit and 1 run.

The Marlins traded Hoyt to the Los Angeles Angels on March 29, 2021. He spent most of the 2021 season in the minors, playing in just nine games with the Angels. After the season ended, he played in the Dominican Winter League.

Hoyt became a free agent on November 7, 2021.
