Jared Hughes, retired relief pitcher, was first drafted in 2003 by the Tampa Bay Rays but he opted instead to attend college. Three years later, he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He pitched in the Pirates' minor league system from 2006 through 2010. He was a starting pitcher from 2006 through 2008 and both a starter and a reliever in 2009 and 2010.

Hughes pitched in 12 games with the Pirates in 2011. He had a 4.09 ERA in 11.0 innings. He spent the rest of the season in the minors.

In 2012, his first full season in the majors, Hughes had career highs in innings pitched (75.2) and strikeouts (50 to 22 walks). He had a 2.85 ERA in 66 games. The following season, he spent time on the DL with shoulder inflammation. He had a 4.78 ERA in 29 games in 2013.

Hughes had a second full season with the Pirates in 2014, pitching in 63 games with them. He finished the season with a career low ERA of 1.96. He pitched in a career high 76 games in 2015 and he finished with a 2.28 ERA.

Hughes pitched in 67 games in 2016. He finished the season with 1 win and 1 loss, 1 save, 34 strikeouts to 22 walks, and a 3.03 ERA in 59.1 innings.

The Pirates released Hughes on March 29, 2017. He was signed by the Milwaukee Brewers on April 2nd. He finished the 2017 season with 5 wins and 3 losses, 1 save, 48 strikeouts to 24 walks, and a 3.02 ERA in 59.2 innings in 67 games.

Hughes became a free agent on December 1, 2017. He signed with the Cincinnati Reds on December 26, 2017. He finished the 2018 season with 4 wins and 3 losses, 7 saves, 59 strikeouts to 23 walks, and a 1.94 ERA in 78.2 innings in 72 games.

The Philadelphia Phillies claimed Hughes off waivers on August 15, 2019. He finished the 2019 season with 5 wins and 5 losses, 1 save, 54 strikeouts to 27 walks, and a 4.04 ERA in 71.1 innings in 47 games with the Reds and 25 games with the Phillies.

Hughes became a free agent on November 4, 2019. He signed a minor league contract with the Houston Astros on February 17, 2020. He was released a month later on March 19th. He signed with the New York Mets on June 30, 2020. He pitched in 18 games with the Mets and he had 1 win and 2 losses and a 4.84 ERA in 22.1 innings.

Hughes retired on February 14, 2021.
