Jose Alvarez, relief pitcher for the San Francisco Giants, was first signed by the Boston Red Sox in July, 2005. After playing in Boston's minor league system for four years, he was traded to the Miami Marlins in November, 2009. He continued to play in the minors through 2012.

Alvarez signed with the Detroit Tigers in November, 2012. He joined the Tigers for 14 games, 6 as a starting pitcher, in 2013. He had one win to five losses and a 5.82 ERA in 38.2 innings. He also spent time in the minors in 2013.

On March 21, 2014, Alvarez was traded to the Los Angeles Angels. He played in just two games with the Angels in 2014, pitching the rest of that year in the minors and in the Venezuelan Winter League.

Alvarez had his first full season in the majors in 2015, pitching in 64 games in relief with the Angels. He finished the season with 4 wins to 3 losses, 59 strikeouts to 23 walks, and a 3.49 ERA in 67.0 innings. The Angels traded Alvarez to the Philadelphia Phillies on December 6, 2018. He finished the 2019 season with 3 wins and 4 losses, 1 save, 51 strikeouts to 18 walks, and a 3.36 ERA in 59.0 innings in 67 games.

Alvarez spent most of the shortened 2020 season on the IL. He pitched just 6.1 innings in 8 games, and he had an ERA of 1.42.
