Matt Dermody, relief pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, was drafted twice while at the University of Iowa, first in 2009 by the Pittsburgh Pirates and a year later, by the Colorado Rockies. He didn't sign with either team. In 2012, he was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks but they didn't sign him when an injury led to Tommy John surgery. He was drafted in 2013 by the Toronto Blue Jays.

Dermody pitched in the Blue Jays' minor league system from 2013 through most of 2016. He pitched just 3.0 innings in 5 games with the Blue Jays in 2016 and he had a 12.00 ERA.

Dermody spent much of the 2017 season in the minors. In 23 games with the Blue Jays, he had 2 wins and no losses and a 4.43 ERA in 22.1 innings.

Dermody spent most of the 2018 and 2019 seasons on the DL. He didn't pitch for the Blue Jays during either season.

Dermody became a free agent on November 4, 2019. He signed a minor league contract with the Chicago Cubs on December 29, 2020. He pitched just 1.0 innings in 1 game with the Cubs in 2020.

The Cubs released Dermody on January 19, 2021. He played in Japan in 2021.

Dermody signed a minor league contract with the Cubs on February 8, 2022. He was released on August 9th.

Dermody signed a minor league contract with the Red Sox on January 31, 2023.
