Nick Wittgren, relief pitcher, was a closer at the University of Purdue. In his two seasons there as the team's closer, he had 22 saves, 94 strikeouts, and a 2.54 ERA in 92.0 innings.

The Miami Marlins drafted Wittgren in 2012. He pitched in their minor league system as a relief pitcher only from 2012 through 2015. As a closer in the minors, he had 81 saves.

Wittgren pitched in 48 games with the Marlins in 2016. He finished the season with 4 wins and 3 losses, 42 strikeouts to 10 walks, and a 3.14 ERA in 51.2 innings.

Wittgren finished the 2017 season with 7 wins and 4 losses, 85 strikeouts to 23 walks, and a 3.83 ERA in 42.1 innings in 38 games.

Wittgren's time was split between the majors and the minor leagues in 2018. He pitched in 32 games with the Marlins and he had 2 wins and 1 loss, 31 strikeouts to 15 walks, and a 2.94 ERA in 33.2 innings. He also pitched 30.2 innings in 27 games in the minors.

The Marlins traded Wittgren to the Cleveland Indians on February 4, 2019. He finished the 2019 season with 5 wins and 1 loss, 4 saves, 60 strikeouts to 15 walks, and a 2.81 ERA in 57.2 innings in 55 games.

Wittgren pitched in 25 games in 2020. He finished the season with 2 wins and no losses, 28 strikeouts to 6 walks, and a 3.42 ERA in 23.2 innings. In the postseason, he pitched 1.1 innings in 1 game, and he gave up no hits.

Wittgren finished the 2021 season with 2 wins and 9 losses, 61 strikeouts to 17 walks, and a 5.05 ERA in 62.1 innings in 60 games.

Wittgren became a free agent on November 5, 2021. He signed with the St. Louis Cardinals on March 13, 2022. He was released on July 9th.
