Shawn Armstrong, relief pitcher for the Tampa Bay Rays, was first drafted by the Houston Astros in 2008 but he opted instead to play for East Carolina University. The following year, he had shoulder surgery and he didn't play. He was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in 2011 and he pitched in their minor league system from 2011 through 2015.

Armstrong pitched 8.0 innings in 8 games with the Indians in 2015 and he had a 2.25 ERA. He spent the rest of the season in the minors. In 2016, he again spent most of the season in the minors, pitching just 10.2 innings in 10 games with the Indians.

Armstrong's time in 2017 was split between the majors and the minors. He pitched 24.2 innings in 21 games with the Indians and he had a 4.38 ERA. He didn't pitch in the postseason.

The Indians traded Armstrong to the Seattle Mariners on December 13, 2017. He spent most of the 2018 season in the minors, pitching just 14.2 innings in 14 games with the Mariners.

The Baltimore Orioles claimed Armstrong off waivers on April 28, 2019. He spent time on the DL in 2019 with a right forearm strain. He finished the season with a 1-1 record, 4 saves, 63 strikeouts to 29 walks, and a 5.74 ERA in 58.0 innings in 4 games with the Mariners and 51 games with the Orioles.

Armstrong pitched in 14 games in 2020. He finished the season with 2 wins and no losses and a 1.80 ERA in 15.0 innings.

The Orioles traded Armstrong to the Rays on July 30, 2021. He finished the season with a 6.75 ERA in 36.0 innings in 20 games with the Orioles and 11 games with the Rays.
