Andy Green, former manager of the San Diego Padres, was a star athlete in high school. He was also gifted academically and was his class' valedictorian. He attended the University of Kentucky on an academic scholarship and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a 3.89 GPA. As an athlete, he was the university's all-time leader in hits with 277 and in runs scored with 199.

Green was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2000. He played with the Diamondbacks through 2006. In 2007, he played in Japan. He returned to the major leagues in 2009 with the New York Mets. As a major league player in 140 games, he batted .200 with 46 hits. Defensively, he played at second base, third base, shortstop, and in left field.

After retiring as a major league player, Green managed minor league teams from 2012 through 2014. He was successful as a manager and he was named the Southern League Manager of the Year in both 2013 and 2014.

Green was hired as the Diamondbacks' third base coach in 2015. On October 29, 2015, he was named the Padres' manager for 2016. Green and the Padres didn't fare well in 2016, finishing in last place in the NL West division. They had 68 wins to 94 losses.

Green and the Padres finished in fourth place in the NL West division in 2017. They had 71 wins and 91 losses. They had an even worse season in 2018, finishing in last place in the NL West division, with 66 wins and 96 losses.

Green was fired by the Padres on September 21, 2019. The Padres' record at the time was 69 wins and 85 losses.

In four years as manager of the Padres, Green led the team to 274 wins and 366 losses.

Green was hired as the bench coach for the Chicago Cubs on December 9, 2019.
