Andy Pettitte first signed with the Yankees in 1991. He started in their minor league teams, pitching in the minors from 1991 through 1994.

In 1995, Pettitte pitched in 31 games for the Yankees. That season, he had a 12-9 record, with a 4.17 ERA and 114 strikeouts to 63 walks. He stayed with the Yankees through 2003, becoming a free agent after the 2003 season ended. While with the Yankees, Pettitte won the American League Championship series MVP award in 2001 and the Warren Spahn award in 2003.

After the 2003 season, Pettitte signed a three-year, $31.5 million contract with the Houston Astros. When that contract ended, he signed on again with the Yankees.

In 2011, Pettitte decided to retire but the urge to pitch again was too great and he returned to pitch for New York in 2012 and 2013. He announced his second and final retirement on September 20, 2013. In his last season as a major league player, he had a 3.74 ERA with 11 wins and 11 losses and 128 strikeouts to 48 walks in 185.1 innings in 30 games.
