Birthplace: Tuxedo, New York

Although Walt Weiss, former manager of the Colorado Rockies, was first drafted as a player in 1982 by the Baltimore Orioles, he decided to pursue a college education instead. Three years later, he was drafted by the Oakland Athletics and he made his major league debut with them in September, 1987. After an AL Rookie of the Year first full year in 1988, Weiss continued as the Athletics shortstop until he was traded to the Seattle Mariners following the 1992 season.

Known as a good defensive player, Weiss played in the major leagues for 14 years, moving from the Mariners to the Florida Marlins in 1993 and to the Colorado Rockies as a free agent in 1994. Weiss' statistics over 14 years include 1,495 games played, 1,207 hits, 182 doubles, 96 stolen bases, and a batting average of .258.

In 2002, Weiss was again hired by the Colorado Rockies and he stayed with them through 2008, serving as both a special instructor and an advisor to the front office. He returned to the Rockies in 2013 as their new manager. In his first year as manager, the Rockies had a poor season, ending in fifth place in the National League West division with a 74-88 win-loss record. Even though Weiss and the Rockies did not fare well in 2013, the team's ownership gave Weiss an additional contract to manage the team through 2016.

Weiss and the Rockies had another poor season in 2014. This time, they finished in fourth place in the NL West division with a dismal 66-96 record. They followed this up with a similar season in 2015, finishing in fifth place with 68 wins to 94 losses.

The Rockies had a slightly better season in 2016, finishing in third place in the NL West division with 75 wins to 87 losses. On October 3, 2016, Weiss announced that he was stepping down as manager of the Rockies. In his four years as the Rockies' manager, Weiss had a 283-365 win-loss record.

Weiss was hired as the bench coach for the Atlanta Braves on November 10, 2017.
