Birthplace: Newark, New Jersey

Bo Porter, former manager of the Houston Astros, had a short career as a player, starting in the minor leagues. The Chicago Cubs drafted him in 1993 but they didn't call him up to the majors until 1999. He played in the majors for just three years, moving in 2000 to the Oakland Athletics and the following year to the Texas Rangers. In those three years, he hit with a batting average of only .214.
Porter played in the minor leagues for several years for both the Atlanta Braves and the Colorado Rockies before moving to a coaching position in 2005. After a year as a hitting coach, he became a minor league manager.
In 2007, Porter made it back to the major leagues, this time as a coach and instructor for the Florida Marlins, remaining in that position through 2009. He moved to the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2010 as a third base and bench coach for the team. The following two years were spent by Porter as the third base coach for the Washington Nationals.
Although Porter managed in the minor leagues in 2006, the 2013 season was his first year as a major league manager. His first year was not a good one, with the Astros ending up in last place in the American League West division with a dismal 51-111 win-loss record. The Astros struggled again under Porter's leadership in 2014 and he was fired on September 1, 2014. At the time of his firing, the Astros were in last place in their division with a 59-79 record.
On October 3, 2014, Porter was hired as the new third base coach for the Atlanta Braves. He was replaced by Ron Washington at the end of the 2016 season. He was then given the position of special assistant to the Braves' general manager. He left that position on February 9, 2018, to run a camp for free agents.
