Marco Scutaro, Retired

Date of Birth: 10/30/1975
Birthplace: San Felipe, Venezuela

Although Marco Scutaro was first signed by the Cleveland Indians in 1994, he never played with them. In August, 2000, after playing in the minor leagues, the Indians traded him to the Milwaukee Brewers. However, he never played with the Brewers either because they put him on waivers in the Spring of 2002 after playing only with their minor league teams.

In April, 2002, the New York Mets claimed Scutaro off waivers and he was finally with a team that called him up on July 19, 2002. After just 27 games with the Mets in 2002 and 48 games in 2003, Scutaro left for the Oakland Athletics and in 2004, he became their starting second baseman. He had a decent first full-season in the major leagues, batting .273 with 124 hits and 32 doubles. Scutaro was with the Athletics until November, 2007, when they traded him to the Toronto Blue Jays.

After two years with the Blue Jays, Scutaro signed a two-year contract with the Boston Red Sox. Although Boston picked up Scutaro's third year option, he was once again traded in January, 2012, this time to the National League and the Colorado Rockies. He didn't last long with the Rockies and at the end of July, 2012, they traded him to the San Francisco Giants. He played well for the Giants in 2012, especially in the playoffs, winning the National League Championship series MVP award.

The Giants showed their confidence in Scutaro's abilities in December, 2012, by signing him to a three-year, $20 million contract. Scutaro had another good year in 2013, with 145 hits, 23 doubles, and a .297 batting average in 127 games. He missed almost all of the 2014 season with back problems that kept him on the DL for all but five games.

Scutaro was designated for assignment on January 21, 2015. He was released seven days later. The Giants signed him again on June 17, 2015, but he never played with them again, spending the 2015 season on the DL. He retired after the season ended.
