How to Organize iPad Apps with Folders

Contents

I usually like to keep my home screens and apps neatly organized in folders. I name my folders according to categories that make sense for the way I use my iPads.

You can create any categories that make sense to you and meet your needs, and you can make as many or as few folders as you need. You can name and rename your folders whenever you feel the need to do so, which makes them much more useful, in my opinion, than the App Library.

Your home screen can have any combination you want of apps, folders, and widgets (next tutorial). You can even add folders to the iPad dock.

How to Create an App Folder

Creating a folder is very easy. You just need two apps that you want in the same folder. Touch and hold one of the apps until it wiggles and then move it onto the second app. A folder will automatically be created with the two apps. Here's a link to a short video showing you how to merge two apps together to form a new folder: Creating an App Folder from Two Apps.

After you create the folder, it will have a name on it, but this might not be the name you want. To change the name, touch the folder and hold it just until a menu pops up. Select the option "Rename" and type a new name for the folder.

How to Add and Rearrange Apps in Folders

Adding an app to a folder is also easy. Just touch the home screen until the apps wiggle and then touch and hold the app while moving it to a folder. You can add as many apps as you want to a folder. When a folder screen fills up, a new screen will be automatically added.

If you want separate screens in a folder for subcategories of apps, you can create a new folder screen the same way you create new home screens. Open the folder and touch and hold on an empty spot until the apps wiggle. Touch and hold an app you want on a new screen and move it along the center of the folder screen until it creates a new screen. Here's a link to a short video showing you how to create a new screen in a folder: Creating a New Folder Screen.

If you want to remove an app from a folder, you can do it by moving it to the home screen or to another folder. To move the app, touch the screen until the app wiggles. Then touch and hold the app and drag it out of the folder to the new location you want for the app (the home screen, another folder, or the dock).

How to Delete a Folder

If you want to completely delete a folder but keep the apps in it on your home screen, you need to manually remove each app from the folder, following the instructions above for moving apps. You can also remove a folder by accessing the folder's menu and selecting "Remove Folder" but that will remove all apps in the folder from the home screen. The apps will be in the App Library but they won't be visible on the home screen.

Now that you know how to create and use app folders, try creating some and see if this method of organizing iPad apps works well for you.
