Ross Youngs (1972)

Ross Youngs played football and baseball while attending West Texas Military Institute. In 1914, he became a professional baseball player when he signed with the Texas League. The following year, he played in the Western Association until his contract was purchased by the New York Giants in August, 1916.

New York Giants

Youngs played in seven games with the Giants in 1917. The following season, his first full one in the majors, he batted .302 with 143 hits in 121 games.

Youngs led the NL in doubles in 1919 with 31. He batted .311 with 152 hits and a career high 24 stolen bases in 130 games. The next year, he had career highs in hits (204) and games played (153). He finished the 1920 season with 27 doubles, 14 triples, 78 RBIs, 18 stolen bases, and a .351 batting average.

Youngs had career highs in triples (16) and RBIs (102) in 1921. He had 165 hits, 24 doubles, and a .327 batting average in 141 games. He walked 71 times and struck out 47 times.

In 1922, Youngs batted .331 in 149 games. He had 185 hits, a career high 34 doubles, 10 triples, 86 RBIs, and 17 stolen bases. The next year, he had 200 hits, 33 doubles, 12 triple, 87 RBIs, and a .336 batting average in 152 games.

Youngs had a career high batting average of .356 in 1924. He finished the season with 187 hits, 33 doubles, 12 triples, a career high 10 home runs, and 74 RBIs in 133 games. Defensively, he led all NL right fielders in putouts with 236.

Youngs' batting average dropped to .264 in 1925. He had 132 hits, 24 doubles, and 53 RBIs in 130 games. The following season, he played in just 95 games, and he batted .306 with 114 hits.

Youngs career ended in 1927 when he died at the age of just 30.
