Rube Marquard (1971)

Rube Marquard played amateur baseball in 1905, before signing with a semi-pro team later that year. The following year, he started playing professional baseball when he signed with a team in the Ohio-Pennsylvania League. In 1907, he went to the Central League and in 1908, he moved to the American Association. His contract was purchased by the New York Giants in July, 1908.

New York Giants

Marquard made his first appearance with the Giants in 1908, but he played in just one game with them that season. The following season he was a starting pitcher for the Giants. He finished the 1909 season with 5 wins and 13 losses, 109 strikeouts to 73 walks, and a 2.60 ERA in 173.0 innings in 29 games.

Marquard led the NL in strikeouts in 1911. He had 24 wins and 7 losses, a career high 237 strikeouts to 106 walks, and a 2.50 ERA in 277.2 innings in a career high 45 games. The next year, he led the league in wins with a career high of 26 (to 11 losses). He finished the 1912 season wtih a 2.57 ERA in a career high 294.2 innings in 43 games. He struck out 175 batters and walked 80.

Marquard pitched in 42 games in 1913, and he had a 2.50 ERA. The next season, he had a 3.06 ERA in 39 games.

After 27 games with the Giants in 1915, Marquard moved to the Brooklyn Dodgers for 6 games. He finished the season with 11 wins and 10 losses, 92 strikeouts to 38 walks, and a 4.04 ERA in 193.2 innings. He had a no-hitter on April 15, 1915.

Brooklyn Robins/Dodgers

Marquard had a career low ERA of 1.58 in 1916, his first full season with the Dodgers. He had 13 wins and 6 losses and 107 strikeouts to 38 walks in 205.0 innings in 36 games. The following year, his ERA went up to 2.55 in 37 games. He finished the 2017 season with 19 wins and 12 losses in 232.2 innings.

Marquard's ERA continued to climb to 2.64 in 34 games in 1918, and to 3.23 in 28 games in 1920. He pitched in just 8 games in 1919, and he had an ERA of 2.29.

Cincinnati Reds

After the 1921 season, Marquard went to the Cincinnati Reds for a year. In 39 games with the Reds, he had 17 wins and 14 losses and a 3.39 ERA in 265.2 innings.

Boston Braves

Marquard went to the Boston Braves in 1922. He finished that season with an ERA of 5.09 in 39 games. He had 11 wins and 15 losses in 198.0 innings. He pitched better in 1923, finishing with a 3.73 ERA in 38 games. He had 11 wins and 14 losses in 239.0 innings.

Marquard pitched in just 6 games in 1924. In 1925, his last season in the major leagues, he was primarily a relief pitcher, pitching in just 8 games as a starter and in 18 games as a reliever. He finished the season with a 5.75 ERA in 72.0 innings.
